Pretty in Pink
Kenny Ortega was the choreographer for the 1986 John Hughes directed teen movie Pretty in Pink.
The film is about a teenage girl, Andie Walsh (played by Molly Ringwald), who lives on the "wrong side of the tracks" due to her father who can’t hold down a job. She’s fashion-conscious and very mature for her age since she has to take care of her father (played by Harry Dean Stanton) and herself. She works in a New Wave record store where she meets one of the wealthy guys from her high school, Blane McDonnagh (played by Andrew McCarthy), and starts to fall for him. He feels the same about her, but gets a lot of ridicule from his friends about being associated with her. Andie also has a crazy best friend "Duckie" Dale (played by John Cryer) who is obsessedly jealous of her new found love with Blane and also thinks that the relationship is not compatible. Blane and Andie go through many obstacles in their relationship, including a break-up, until they both realize that being from two different worlds shouldn’t keep them apart.
Kenny Ortega came up with the scene when Duckie is in the record store and starts a wild dance, lip-synching to Otis Redding’s "Try a Little Tenderness."
"Pretty in Pink" is a charming and refreshing look at that special period in everyone’s life where growing up really is hard to do." – MovieEye.com
